What is the Louis Icart Registry?

We at TAG Registries (TAG), and starting with the Louis Icart Registry, have added to the art industry, what the automobile, real estate and jewelry industries have always had; a safe and secure system that protects title, buyers, and sellers. We are just like the DMV and real estate title companies, but for art.

Every Louis Icart limited edition piece has a unique edition number written right on it. Like your car and its VIN number, your piece with this unique edition number belongs to you. Until now, there was no public-access database that showed that this number, 34/200 or whatever number was in question, belonged and was registered to one person or organization alone. Counterfeiters have been able to copy the artwork, as well as the receipts and authentication papers and thieves have been able to steal the artwork. And the victims have never been able to see easily and for free that their investment had clean title. This unending cycle has been a financial nightmare for owners, buyers, insurance companies, and the art world in general.

We at TAG, have built the website, software, database, and hardware system that solves all the title ownership problems that exist in the art world now. Not only that, but the system protects the anonymity of the owner at all costs at every step of any process. There are an incredible amount of features that exist in the TAG System that are simply commonsense and exist in every industry except the art world now. Moreover, these are incredible features and functions that are unique for the art industry.

I am an investor. How do I ensure the piece I am interested in belongs to the person or broker I am dealing with and is not stolen or counterfeit.

Within 3 clicks, and for FREE, you can Find a Piece and go to the piece and edition number and immediately see the status of that piece. The status of the piece will be publicly listed as either, safe and "Registered," or be unsafe and "Under Challenge," or "Reported Lost or Stolen". In addition, buyers can ensure that their anticipated investment is owned and under the control of the seller through our patented "Flash Ownership" feature. "Flashing Ownership" can only be turned on by the registered owner or broker.

There is also the option to "View Report" and see the pictures, documents, and notes pertaining to that piece. You will also see when the piece was originally registered, and any subsequent transfer dates. If a piece is "Under Challenge", viewing the report will show the original registration report and the challenging registration report. The owner's personal or contact information is never included, as the Registry does not display any personal information.

I am an auction house, dealer, or broker. How does the Louis Icart Registry work for me?

First off, the Louis Icart Registry works as an anonymous title company, so there is no chance of your seller and buyer ever knowing or contacting each other.

Second, as a trusted agent you should be using the Louis Icart Registry's services to protect yourself and your clients. Always make sure the piece you are going to broker has clean title and is not reported lost or stolen or under challenge as a counterfeit.

Third, if you are acting as an intermediary for a seller and a buyer, it is NOT necessary to register the piece to yourself. Simply follow the simple steps below and transfer ownership to your buyer with no cost to you.

If the piece is already registered in the Louis Icart Registry, follow these steps:

  1. Once the piece is paid for, have the seller/consignor transfer ownership to you.
  2. You will receive 2 links. A "purge url link" that will give you the option of permanently purging any and all of the supporting pictures and documents associated with this piece, and an "acceptance url link" that you forward on to the new owner.
  3. The new owner has 60 days to re-register & be automatically accepted.
If the piece is not registered, you can register it to yourself before transferring or have your buyer register it.

I am an owner. How do I register my piece and my edition number and what does it cost?

  1. Find a Piece to find your piece with your edition number.
  2. Select your piece from the Registry, then click 'Tag It Now'.
  3. Fill out the Registration form. Here is where you can upload pictures, documents, and other information.
  4. At this time, you will be charged a one time application fee. This is a one-time fee and is different for each artist registry. However, for a limited time - all application fees are being waived!
  5. If your application is approved you will be charged a yearly registration fee. You may cancel your registration any time. Like the applicatione fee, this yearly fee is also being waived for a limited time!
Simple, you are registered!

As an applicant or registered owner, what can I do?

Authentication Platform

Every piece is reviewed before being TAG Registered. This is a preliminary inspection, and not a final judgement on authenticity. If approved and TAG Registered, the piece is put on our Authentication Platform, where the community at large is free to give feedback on ownership and authenticity. The longer a piece is TAG Registered with a clean record, the more value it will have. Furthermore, being TAG Registered may act as public notice in some jurisdictions, and limit claims against ownership. So TAG Register!

Report Your Piece Lost or Stolen

Potential buyers checking the Louis Icart Registry will see that this artwork is "Lost or Stolen" and does not have a clean title. All visitors to the site can see the report and aid in the artwork's recovery.

  1. Sign in to "My Registrations" and go to the lost or stolen piece.
  2. On the "Action" tab select "Report Lost or Stolen". You will have the option to fill out an online form adding information helpful in the recovery of your piece.

Flash Ownership

"FLASH" your piece and your edition number to show control and/or ownership to a prospective buyer, art dealer, auction house, broker, etc., of that piece.

  1. Sign in to "My Registrations" and go to the piece you want to "FLASH".
  2. On the "Action" tab select "Flash". At this time, any interested party can go to the Louis Icart Registry to see proof of your ownership and/or control of the selected piece.
  3. The FLASHING will last for 24 hours by default, or can be turned off sooner by accessing your "My Registrations".

Transfer Ownership

As a title company, the registry provides a secure and encrypted platform for ownership to pass hands anonymously and in a way that protects all parties. I.e. sellers can send their artwork to the buyer for inspection, without fear of theft, as sellers only release title to buyers when all financial obligations are met.

  1. Sign in to "My Registrations" and go to the piece you want to transfer. You can transfer to a new owner or broker. (A "broker" may be an art dealer or auction house).
  2. On the "Action" tab; choose "Transfer Ownership" and follow the simple steps.
  3. You will be given 2 url links. A "purge url link" that will give you the option of permanently purging any and all of the supporting pictures and documents associated with this piece, and an "acceptance url link" that you forward on to the new owner.
  4. The new owner has 60 days to use the "acceptance url link" and re-register and be automatically accepted. Once the new owner completes this process, the status is changed to “Registered.” Note: The new owner or broker will also be given the option to purge all of the previous owner's supporting pictures and documents...

Print a Physical Title Document

You can print a time stamped Title Certificate directly from your "My Registrations". This document can be used in support of your control and ownership of your piece.

View, Update, or Cancel Registration.

By going to "My Registrations" you can view, update, or cancel your registration at any time. Registration renewal is done on a yearly basis from the date of initial registration, so cancellation will stop the immediate next payment.

What is the TAG Number?

This TAG Number represents how many months this piece has been in the TAG system, regardless of different owners and transfers. The longer a piece has been TAG'd, the safer the piece is, as it has not had any issues or break in title. Once the TAG Number hits 100 it can no longer be challenged. The TAG Number resets to zero, if a transferee does not re-register the piece, or if a registered owner does not renew yearly.

How do I switch from a Premium Membership to Per Piece Membership or cancel my account?

If you wish to switch or cancel your Premium Membership, please email info@tagregistries.com. If you are currently a Per Piece Member and wish to purchase our Premium Membership that can be done when registering any new piece.

What do I do, if I see my piece registered to someone else?

You will want to immediately "Challenge Ownership" of that piece. Either this piece was stolen from you, or this piece and edition number has been compromised and there is a counterfeit. By "Challenging Ownership" you will start the resolution process, and you will warn and preclude any potential buyer. Furthermore, this challenge process can be done with complete anonymity. *Note: Once a piece is registered for 5 years it can no longer be challenged.

  1. Find a Piece and go to the piece you want to challenge.
  2. On the "Action" tab click the "Challenge Ownership" tab and fill out the form to challenge the previous registrant. (As a challenger you will want to add as much information as possible.)
